Here at G4S, it’s hard to comprehend what a massive scale we work on. We’re the world’s leading name in security solutions in the private sector – and the work we do helps to ensure the safety and welfare of millions of people in more than 125 countries worldwide.

In fact, our work touches people’s lives in nearly every area you can imagine.
G4S has worked within the criminal justice sector in the UK since 1992 after winning the contract to operate HM Prison Wolds; this was the first contract to be awarded to the private sector. Over the years since then we have won numerous contracts to manage prisons, immigration centres, secure training centres, electronic monitoring, courts, police custody suites and prisoner transport.
About G4S Electronic Monitoring
We are the world’s largest provider of electronic monitoring services, monitoring over 40,000 people every day. We provide a comprehensive range of services that support the work of criminal justice and immigration agencies across the world. In the UK alone we monitor over 14,000 people and are responsible for providing electronic monitoring services within three out of five contract areas in England and Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. We also monitor people on behalf of the UK Border Agency (UKBA) either through electronically monitored curfews or voice recognition.
When a person is under curfew, they must stay at home (or other specified location) during certain hours. This is usually for 12 hours during a 24 hour period, every day of the week. The hours can vary depending on circumstances, but most curfews are at night. We check that people are keeping to their curfew and we do this electronically using a tag and monitoring unit. Curfews are used throughout the criminal justice system (as a community service condition of bail or as a condition of release from prison) and also by the UK Border Agency.
